I’m finding it almost impossible to select this control with my mouse! Is there a secret handshake I’m not using? Very frustrating!

Are you talking about the yellow line and its yellow knob for controlling the fade in and fade out timing? You can select the audio in the timeline and control theses values within the “Audio Options” panel. There are Offset and Duration controls for in and out point.
