Opening very old old FM Player apps

I have some very old FM Player apps (Boinx FotoMagico Player, Copyright ©2004-2008 IMAGINE GbR). Is there any way to open them or get them converted to run under current FM?

I tried changing the file name to .fms but I get this error message:

The document “BuenosAires.fms” could not be opened. The file does not exist.

I am running the latest version of FM on an Apple Silicon Mac running the current version of Sequoia.

HI, eogold_9710 –

I haven’t tried this in a long time, since I found keeping my presentations in FotoMagico format was the better way to go (although I do understand WHY some people may prefer to have created a standalone player file when it was offered).

But I was able to locate an old slideshow in standalone format. It had the .app extension on the filename and would not open in the current version of FM. Rather than using the Finder to just change filenames, I use “A Better Finder Rename” instead, which has proved to be more trustworthy for me. In any case, I was able to remove the .app extension and replace it with the .fms extension and the file immediately showed up as a FotoMagico file. I could open it with FM – EXCEPT – I lost all links to the images within the slideshow – so the show played, but each slide had a big red circle with a line through it. Each slide in the timeline also showed an exclamation mark inside a red triangle on the top left. By clicking on that, I saw the name of what file should be there. I moved the slideshow into the same folder as the images that I originally used to create the show, but when I tried to update the missing link, FM crashed on me. I don’t know why…but there’s obviously something buggy going on in that regard. I know I can replace media files when I normally create a slideshow today, but maybe there’s something wrong with the fact that the original file was a standalone player file.

Sorry I can’t help any more than that :frowning:

Update: I was able to copy the FM Player apps to a Mac running macOS Mojave and they all open properly and play. But I want to be able to run them on a current Mac. I tried changing the file extension from .app to .fms but they would open.

– Is there a way to convert them so that they will play on a Mac running recent macOS?

Hi eogold

Why don’t you install the latest version of Fotomagico and use it just to play your show?

As far as I understand, no subscription is required for this.

Kind Regards

Hi, ac-vision –

The OP said he had the latest version of FM, but he couldn’t open the file. If he doesn’t have the ORIGINAL FotoMagico FILE from which the standalone file was created, then it WILL NOT open as is under the latest version of FM. As was posted a few years back, changing the extension from .app to .fms WILL allow it to open; but as I posted yesterday, the images within the file may or may not appear (they may have to have their links updated). And as I also stated, I couldn’t get the links to update without a crash.
