Issues using HEVC (H.265) videos embedded in FM 6 shows

I am struggling since trying to embed HEVC (H.265) videos in FM 6, the colors are displayed correctly in edit mode, but starting the presentation the colors become desaturated (i.e fade out). Videos done in AVC (H.264) mode are still working fine. Any similar experiences in our community and/or idea for the reason?

I’ve got the same problem with new videos in FotoMagico 6.4. After rendering the slide show the colors are also pale. Do you have a solution now?
My newer videos are in HEVC and the colors are pale. In Quicktime and VLC the colors are correct shown.

Hi Heartlakequeen, been with Peter from Boinx in touch but we`ve still got no solution for this issue. Workaround at the moment on my side, is to avoid using HEVC but instead gone back to H.264

Hello, unfortunately there is still no solution to use HEVC videos in Fotomagico?
HEVC videos are still displayed incorrectly (colors desaturated)
The last message here in the forum was 1 year ago, will there be a solution soon?
Is there a recommendation for a workaround?
Unfortunately all iPhone videos are available here as HEVC videos, do you really have to convert them all to H264 (Rec709?) using Handbrake or Compressor etc.?
Direct export as H264 from the photo app is apparently not possible?
That is really very annoying - direct access to the photo app’s media library is of no use.
Greetings Carsten

Hi Carsten, it seems we still face this error with HEVC videos. Just installed the latest version of FM (6.7.4) but videos are still desaturated since embedded in a FM show, while H264 format is still working fine.

I was told by the Fotomagico development team, that they are in touch with Apple to get this issues with HLG or PQ coded videos fixed

Hi there, a quick update on HEVC and HEIC support: We’re still trying to resolve some technical difficulties in moving to HDR support. Thank you for your patience. The workaround currently is to export the videos to h.264 (using QuickTime Player, for example) and the photos to JPEG.

Hi Oliver, as we’re facing this issue since Nov 2023 will be an update on that topic available in the near future?

Hello @Photograph
Have you checked whether the problem still exists?
I just edited a show where h265/HEVC videos were imported. I didn’t see any problems.

@Oliver_Boinx What is Boinx’s response?

Hello ac-vision, since I am in regular contact with the Boinx development team and run the h265/HEVC issue with any new FM release (did it with the latest 6.8.1 as well), this topic is still not solved. The reason is that Apple did not provide the API which is requested and needed to fix this problem. h265 photos are working fine but with videos the issue still exists.

Hello @Photograph

What did you use to create your H265/HEVC videos?

I conducted tests in the fall

1. From the iPhone: 4K H265 (in .mov container)

2. From the Canon R5 mk2 4K as both h264 and h265, and 8K as h265. However, the Canon saves in .mp4 container.

3. From Fotomagico 4K generated h265 (in .mov container).

All three test scenarios ran flawlessly in presentation mode.

On an Apple M1

I had problems with h265 videos generated by WingsX. They don’t run natively on Mac, so they don’t work in Fotomagico, PowerPoint, Keynote, or Final Cut Pro. However, they do work in VLC Player and Handbrake.

Best regards, Achim

P.S. What does Boinx say about this? @Oliver_Boinx , @Achim_Boinx , @Peter_Boinx

Hi Achim, all videos are created with an iPhone 15 Pro Max in H.265 mode. Adding a video to a FM show works fine but as soon as starting presentation mode a color fade out is still occurring. Talking to Peter from Boinx, I was told he‘s able to reproduce this problem. FM is installed on a MacBook Pro running on macOS 26.1 (macOS Tahoe), the problem happened with older macOS versions as well.

Hi photograph

You are absolutely right.

I just downloaded an H265 video from the iPhone 16 Pro Max in its original format (as H265) and once as H264.

The H265 loses saturation in Fotomagico (but also in WingsX).

I can’t see any difference in QuickTime. However, there are differences in FinalCutPro.

Hello Achim, thank you for your note and confirmation of this issue. Actually the only workaround is to use H.264 video format with FM. Best regards

Hi, as @Photograph points out we are waiting for Apple to provide the APIs needed to figure out how to properly display HDR video frames. While MacOS knows how to play back the video files correctly if you let it play the entire video, the trouble starts when you’re trying to play them frame by frame, which FotoMagico needs to do. Then, you need to know the actual color information for each frame. Those APIs are currently missing in MacOS.
