I have tried several times to download the update to 5.5 from my version 5.2.2 do I need to pay to update this or is there a free update?
The updated within a major release number are all free. If you have a valide FotoMagico 5 licenses you can get all 5.x updates for free.
Are you using the download version or the AppStore version?
In case of the download version you can always go to our website and download the current version here:

In case of the AppStore it might help to remove the FotoMagico app from your Applications folder and download the app again from the AppStore.
