Best Practices for Using Boinx Software in Live Events - Emmanuel Katto

Hi everyone,

My name is Emmanuel Katto. I’m planning to use Boinx software for an upcoming live event and would love to hear your tips and best practices. Specifically, I’m curious about:

  • What features do you find most useful during live streaming?
  • Any advice on managing technical issues in real-time?
  • How do you incorporate graphics and overlays effectively?

Looking forward to your insights!

Thanks!
Emmanuel Katto

Hi @emmanuelkatto Thanks for joining our community and getting into mimoLive!

What features do you find most useful during live streaming?

That is a very good question and it depends a lot on what you’re doing. For example, I really like the ability to have multiple camera views visible at the same time, so that the viewer gets a more complete picture of what is going on. There are multiple Layers that have been designed for this: The PIP Window layer is very flexible and animates nicely from Layer Variant to Layer Variant, allowing you to move and scale video around on the Programm Output. The Splitscreen Layer is easy to use to quickly get multiple camera angles on the screen. If you’re stream a party, I also like to have duplicates of camera sources with different effect filters applied to them.

Any advice on managing technical issues in real-time?

Keep your eyes on the Source Performance Monitor (in the Window menu). It tells you if there is trouble with getting video into the Mac. The Mac Activity Monitor app shows you if your computer has enough resources to handle what you’re trying to do and the Render Performance Monitor (also in the mimoLive Window menu) shows you where your Layer Stack might have performance issues.

How do you incorporate graphics and overlays effectively?

The Layer types I use most with overlays is the Lower Third layer and the the Logo Layer. With the Lower Third, you can have a custom background and render text over it so you do not have to render your Lower Thirds in advance. If you have complex background animations, you can have a ProRes 4444 file to render a background and the Lower Third Pro layer lets you control exactly when to render text over it.
The Logo Layer is an easy way to place a graphic anywhere on the screen. There are also a lot of dynamic Layers like the Analog Clock, Timer, Countdown, Charts, Table and so on that are fun to play with.

If you want to use graphics or video as overlays, make sure that the format is PNG for images and ProRes 4444 for video to be able to use transparency. Also, it is recommended to render images and video so that their dimensions are only their bounding box (does not contain the areas that are transparent) and not the entire 1080p or 4K screen size.

Feel free to ask more specific questions about best practices and let us know your thoughts on what you find while you work on your project.
